Simple Process

How WhatsApp Phone Verification Works with a Virtual Number

WhatsApp sends a 6-digit SMS code to the phone number you enter during setup. A virtual number receives that code the same way a regular SIM would.

1

Select a Country and Get Your Number

Choose a country from the widget, copy the virtual number you receive. Include the country code — WhatsApp requires the full international format. Available countries and prices are shown in the widget and may change over time.

2

Enter It in WhatsApp During Setup

When WhatsApp prompts for a phone number — during new account creation or when adding a number to WhatsApp Business — enter the virtual number. WhatsApp will send a 6-digit verification code to it via SMS.

3

Copy the Code and Complete Verification

The code appears in your MrSMS dashboard. Enter it in WhatsApp. You're only charged when the code arrives — if WhatsApp doesn't send one, your balance is untouched.

Why MrSMS

Why MrSMS for WhatsApp Phone Verification

WhatsApp's identity system is built on phone numbers — here's how a virtual number fits into that without involving your personal SIM.

Separate Personal and Professional WhatsApp

WhatsApp allows one account per number. A virtual number lets you run a distinct WhatsApp account for business, freelance work, or a specific project — with the account and phone number separate from your personal WhatsApp account.

Keep Your Personal Number Private

People who know or receive your WhatsApp number may be able to contact you and view profile information according to your privacy settings. A virtual number keeps your real SIM out of the account, which is useful when sharing a WhatsApp contact publicly or with clients.

Pay Only When the Code Arrives

MrSMS charges only after a verification SMS is successfully delivered. If WhatsApp doesn't send a code to the number — for any reason — nothing is deducted from your balance.

190+ Countries to Choose From

WhatsApp is available in most countries and accepts numbers from a wide range of regions. If one country's number doesn't deliver a code, switching to another takes seconds.

Crypto Payment Accepted

Top up your MrSMS balance with Bitcoin, USDT, or other supported cryptocurrencies. No credit card or bank account needed to complete a verification.

Simple Dashboard Experience

Select WhatsApp, choose a country, wait for the code. Your dashboard updates in real time when the SMS arrives — no refresh, no waiting in the dark.

Use Cases

Who Uses Virtual Numbers for WhatsApp

WhatsApp's phone-number requirement comes up in several situations where a virtual number is a practical solution.

Setting up a WhatsApp Business account

WhatsApp Business requires a unique phone number — one that isn't already registered as a standard WhatsApp account. A virtual number lets you register a business-dedicated line without needing a separate SIM card or device.

Running a second WhatsApp account

On supported devices, WhatsApp's account-switching feature allows adding another account with a separate phone number — availability may depend on the app version and device. A virtual number from MrSMS provides the second number without requiring a second SIM.

Keeping your real number off client-facing accounts

Freelancers, consultants, and small business owners often prefer to have a client-facing WhatsApp number that isn't their personal mobile. A virtual number separates professional communication from personal without maintaining two phones.

Verifying an additional account while traveling

Travelers who swap local SIMs when arriving in a new country may not have their home number available. A virtual number from MrSMS can be used for a one-time verification session, independent of which physical SIM is currently in the device.

WhatsApp Phone Verification — A Practical Guide

How WhatsApp uses phone numbers

WhatsApp's architecture is built around phone numbers as identifiers. Unlike most apps that use email addresses or usernames, WhatsApp uses your phone number as your unique identifier — it's what others search for to find you, and what's displayed on your profile.

When you install WhatsApp, it sends a 6-digit SMS code to the number you enter on the setup screen. Entering that code confirms you control the number, and WhatsApp creates the account under it. This is the verification step that a virtual number handles.

Important: Each phone number can only be linked to one WhatsApp account at a time. If you use a virtual number for a new account, that number becomes the account's identifier. The virtual number is only needed for the initial verification step.

Creating a second WhatsApp account with a virtual number

WhatsApp requires each account to be linked to a unique phone number. On supported devices, WhatsApp's account-switching feature allows adding another account with a separate number — availability may depend on the app version and device. A virtual number from MrSMS provides that second number without requiring a second physical SIM.

  • On supported devices: go to WhatsApp Settings → Account → Add Account, then follow the setup flow using your virtual number
  • Alternatively, install WhatsApp on a second device and use the virtual number there

Once the second account is verified, it keeps the account and phone number separate from your personal WhatsApp account.

WhatsApp Business verification with a virtual number

WhatsApp Business is the version of WhatsApp designed for business communication. It adds features like a business profile, product catalogs, quick replies, and automated messages. Like the standard app, it requires a phone number for verification during setup.

A phone number generally cannot remain actively registered in both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business at the same time. Existing numbers may be moved between the apps through WhatsApp's supported process. A virtual number from MrSMS can be used to complete the SMS verification step when setting up WhatsApp Business.

Note: WhatsApp Business API (used by larger businesses for CRM integration) has different requirements and typically needs a number that's not already in use on any WhatsApp platform. Standard WhatsApp Business app verification through MrSMS works the same as for a personal account.

If the SMS doesn't arrive: what to try

WhatsApp gives you the option to receive the verification code via a voice call if the SMS doesn't arrive within about 60 seconds. However, MrSMS numbers are primarily intended for SMS reception and may not support incoming calls — this option is not guaranteed to work with all virtual numbers.

If SMS delivery doesn't work for a particular country, your first step is to try a different country in MrSMS. Since you're only charged on successful code delivery, switching is free.

Tip: If you see WhatsApp's "Call me" option appear after waiting, you can try it — but results with virtual numbers vary. Switching to a different country in MrSMS is often the more reliable path.

After verification — what happens to the account

Once WhatsApp verification is complete, the account is linked to the virtual number you used. The account functions fully — messaging, calls, group chats, status updates, and all other WhatsApp features work normally.

The virtual number is only needed during the initial setup. After verification, WhatsApp doesn't regularly re-verify your number. If you later need to re-verify — for example, after reinstalling the app or moving to a new device — you would need access to that number again to receive a new code.

For long-term account access: Enable WhatsApp two-step verification and add a recovery email after registration. This improves account security, although WhatsApp may still require access to the registered phone number in some registration or recovery situations.

WhatsApp, phone numbers, and contact visibility

People who know or receive your WhatsApp number may be able to contact you and see profile information according to your privacy settings. Your WhatsApp phone number is the account identifier and may be visible to people you chat with or share groups with, depending on the product context and privacy settings.

Using a virtual number for a WhatsApp account means the number visible in that context is the virtual one — not your personal SIM. This is useful in situations where you'd rather not have your real mobile number associated with a particular account or group.
